The Power of Play: Learning Through Joy and Discovery

In our classrooms, play is never “just play.” Every laugh, every tower built, every muddy puddle explored is part of something much bigger. Play is how tamariki make sense of the world around them, how they test ideas, build relationships, and discover who they are as learners.

At the heart of our programme is a play-based approach that honours each child’s natural curiosity and creativity. Guided by the principles of Te Whāriki: He Whāriki Mātauranga mō ngā Mokopuna o Aotearoa, we see play as both the journey and the destination for early learning.

Why Play Matters

Play allows children to learn at their own pace and in their own way. It helps them develop confidence, language, and problem-solving skills while also strengthening social and emotional wellbeing. When tamariki are deeply engaged in play, they are practising focus, persistence, and cooperation, the very skills that set them up for lifelong learning.

The Role of the Kaiako

Our kaiako are more than observers; they are partners in play. They listen, ask questions, and gently extend each child’s thinking. When a child builds a block tower, the kaiako might ask, “What could we do to make it taller?” or “How many blocks do you think you’ll need?” In these moments, play transforms into powerful learning.

Learning Across the Strands

Each playful experience we offer connects to the strands of Te Whāriki.

Wellbeing | Mana Atua - Children feel safe, valued, and free to take risks.

Belonging | Mana Whenua - Play helps tamariki build a sense of place and connection with others.

Contribution | Mana Tangata - Group play encourages teamwork, empathy, and fairness.

Communication | Mana Reo - Through stories, pretend play, and art, children explore language and expression.

Exploration | Mana Aotūroa - Play inspires curiosity, creativity, and discovery about the natural and physical world.

Play Beyond the Classroom

We encourage families to see play as learning at home too. Cooking together, gardening, collecting shells at the beach, or building with recycled materials all help children develop important life skills. When parents engage in play, they strengthen relationships and nurture a love of learning that lasts far beyond early childhood.

Learning Through Play, Growing Through Joy

Our curriculum is designed to let children’s imaginations lead the way. We believe that when learning feels joyful and meaningful, children thrive. Through play, they build not only knowledge but also confidence, resilience, and a lifelong curiosity about the world.
